TPop's new contracts for the lulz...

Fri May 30, 2008, 8:01 PM
I know a few friends who have been approached by TokyoPOP lately for doing their new Manga Pilot Program. So, I figured I should share this.

"“MORAL RIGHTS” AND YOUR CREDIT
Moral rights” is a fancy term (the French thought it up) that basically has to do with having your name attached to your creation (your credit!) and the right to approve or disapprove certain changes to your creation. Of course, we want you to get credit for your creation, and we want to work with you in case there are changes, but we want to do so under the terms in this pact instead of under fancy French idea. So, in order for us to adapt the Manga Pilot for different media, and to determine how we should include your credit in tough situations, you agree to give up any "moral rights" you might have.

Of course, you still have your rights under this pact to your credit.
"

Lawls. I sincerly hope no one actually intends on signing over their work to these assholes. I suggest you read the full contract. It's seriously lolzworthy.

I'm seriously amazed that they don't have a clause in there about how attractive contributors may be required to send in naked photos or sleep with the editorial staff.

I mean they pretty much demean creators in every other possible way.
Wow, thanks for posting that Zeldyn. I'd given some non-committal thought about sending something to TokyoPop in the future.. but now I'd avoid it like the plague unless they change their contracts and operating policies heavily. Even then I'd run it by a lawyer.

I was surprised there wasn't a paragraph about bending over and taking it sans lube ^^

"If you have to tell someone you are something, you're probably not..."
Make sure you do with any company you intend on publishing through! It's always a good idea to have lawyers read through the stuff they intend for you to not understand ^^

I think there is one in the journal entry. If not, it's probably up on their site.

Here it is ^^

"If TokyoPop wishes then they may allow you to use a lube that you're provided, however the company is under no requirement to provide lube and we have to reserve the right to veto any you bring along if we don't want to expose ourselves to it."
This only furthers my suspicions that Tokyopop is only popular because the name involves Japan.

The attempted friendly tone of their contract is hilarious.
